Ryndia Silk Weavers of Ri-Bhoi Receive Prime Ministerial Applause

Shillong, Meghalaya: In a significant boost for Meghalaya’s rich textile heritage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially recognised the state’s traditional Ryndia silk, a move that has been met with heartfelt gratitude by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The recognition, described as a major acknowledgement of the exquisite handwoven fabric crafted by women artisans in the Ri-Bhoi district, underscores the growing national and international appreciation for indigenous Indian textiles.

Chief Minister Sangma took to social media to express his appreciation, tweeting, “Grateful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi ji for recognizing Ryndia — Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Eri silk, handwoven by Ri-Bhoi District’s women weavers.” He also extended thanks to designer KINIHO for their “care and creativity” in reinterpreting the heritage fabric.

The Prime Minister’s recognition arrived in an official letter dated June 24, 2025, where he acknowledged receiving a piece of the traditional fabric. Modi lauded its significance as a symbol of Meghalaya’s vibrant cultural heritage, stating, “Your thoughtfulness is touching and is deeply appreciated.” He further highlighted how such products align seamlessly with the burgeoning global demand for ethically produced and environmentally sustainable textiles, noting the worldwide shift in consumer preferences towards products that minimise environmental impact. “It is in this context that products such as ‘Ryndia Silk’ stand out. The grant of the GI Tag to it is yet another step that reiterates our resolve to promote such products on the global stage,” the letter elaborated.

In a personal touch, Prime Minister Modi shared his admiration for the state, reflecting, “Whenever I have visited Meghalaya, I have been overwhelmed by the affection of the people, the pristine natural beauty and the unlimited potential of its energetic youth.” The Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Ryndia silk is crucial, as it not only safeguards the traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations of Meghalayan artisans but also unlocks new avenues for market opportunities. Eri silk, famously known as “peace silk,” is uniquely produced without harming silkworms, making it particularly attractive to the ever-expanding demographic of environmentally conscious consumers globally.

This formal recognition of Ryndia silk forms part of broader government initiatives aimed at elevating traditional Indian textiles onto international platforms. The distinctive characteristics of Ryndia silk, coupled with the specialised skills of local weavers, particularly the women of the Ri-Bhoi district, are pivotal in establishing its unique identity within the competitive global textile market. Prime Minister Modi concluded his letter by reaffirming his steadfast commitment to serving the people of Meghalaya and ensuring the state’s vital role in the journey towards creating a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
