Sahay Assam’s Silent Service: NGO Performs Last Rites for Over 150 Unclaimed and Destitute Individuals

Morigaon: In a heartfelt display of humanity, Morigaon-based voluntary organisation Sahay Assam has quietly carried out the last rites of more than 150 unclaimed or financially distressed individuals over the years, bringing dignity to the departed and solace to grieving families.

In its most recent act of compassion, the organisation stepped forward to assist Parmeshwar Thakur, a daily wage labourer from Dhing, Nagaon, now residing in Morigaon, who lost his wife Moushumi Devi to jaundice after a prolonged six-month illness. Unable to afford the funeral, a devastated Parmeshwar sought help from Sahay Assam.

Moved by his plight, Raju Mahanta, president of the NGO, and his team promptly arranged the funeral at Bhootnath Crematorium in Morigaon, ensuring that Moushumi Devi received a dignified farewell.

Their noble effort was supported by Morigaon Superintendent of Police Hemanta Kumar Das and Sultan Nursing Home owner Mohar Sultan, who extended special assistance for the cremation.

Founded on the belief of “humanity above all”, Sahay Assam continues to serve as a ray of hope for society’s most vulnerable. From handling unclaimed bodies to supporting grieving families in their darkest hours, the organisation’s silent but impactful service is a testament to the power of community-driven compassion.

Under Raju Mahanta’s leadership, Sahay Assam remains a shining example of selfless humanitarian work in Assam.
