Sanjay Roy Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Rape and Murder of On-Duty Doctor
National: Sanjay Roy, convicted of the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been sentenced to life imprisonment until death and fined ₹50,000 by the Sealdah CBI court. The verdict was delivered on January 20, two days after his conviction.
Judge Anirban Das, pronouncing the sentence, stated, “I think this is not a case of rarest of the rare. That’s why I am giving you imprisonment till your death.” The judgment followed a heated hearing where both sides presented arguments regarding the severity of the punishment.
Earlier, Sanjay Roy maintained his innocence when asked by the judge if he had anything to say regarding his sentence. “I have been framed without any reason,” he told the court, alleging procedural misconduct during the investigation. He claimed, “I was not allowed to speak and was forced to sign many papers.”
The CBI, arguing for the death penalty, labeled the crime as one of the rarest of the rare. “The victim was a meritorious student and an asset to society,” the CBI lawyer stated. “This incident has shaken the entire community. If even doctors are not safe, then what can be said? Only the death penalty can restore society’s faith in the justice system.”
The court, however, chose life imprisonment, ruling out the death penalty despite the CBI’s arguments.
Sanjay Roy was charged under Section 64 (rape), Section 66 (punishment for causing death), and Section 103 (murder). The case has drawn widespread attention, raising concerns about safety and justice for healthcare professionals.
