Sarabjit Singh’s Wife Sukhpreet Kaur Dies In Road Accident In Punjab
Guwahati: The wife of Sarabjit Singh, who was murdered in a Lahore jail in 2013, Sukhpreet Kaur, died in a car accident on Monday.
According to reports, Swapandeep Kaur the daughter of Sarabjit Singh, and her mother Sukhpreet Kaur reportedly fell from a motorcycle on Sunday as they were travelling to Jalandhar.
The Sukhpreet was immediately taken to a hospital, but she passed away due to her health conditions. Her cremation will take place today.
Sarabjit Singh was a farmer from Bhikhiwind town in Punjab who formerly resided close to the India-Pakistan border. While intoxicated, he unintentionally crossed the border. He was, nevertheless, given a death sentence in 1991 by a Pakistani court.
Singh was held in the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore for 22 years until his fellow inmates attacked him and took him to the hospital. Following an assault on him on the jail grounds in 2013, Singh was comatose for five days before being diagnosed as dead by medical professionals at Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital. He had suffered severe head injuries.
His older sister Dalbir Kaur battled the system for her brother’s release during his 22 years in prison.
Dalbir Kaur had consistently asserted that Singh, her brother, was innocent and had accidentally strayed into Pakistan at the time of his detention. She also visited her brother in Pakistan.
Singh’s sister, Dalbir Kaur, called for an investigation into the case and stated: “If the attack was planned by the government itself, then there is no need for an inquiry. But if Sarabjit was attacked without the knowledge of the authorities, then an inquiry is definitely needed.” The Ministry of External Affairs had asked the Pakistani government to look into Singh’s death.
Dalbir Kaur also passed away in June this year.
