Sarbananda Sonowal Demands Congress Apology, Hails BJP’s Development in Northeast
Assam: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on December 6 accused the Congress of failing to foster development in the Northeast during its decades of governance, demanding a public apology from the party.
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Sonowal emphasized the transformative progress achieved under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, which he said has turned the region into a hub of peace and prosperity.
Sonowal criticized the Congress for leaving the Northeast in a state of neglect, claiming there was “little to no development” during its rule at both the central and state levels. In contrast, he highlighted the BJP-led government’s achievements, including the construction of roads, highways, bridges, airports, railway lines, ports, and higher education institutions. “It was a total failure of the Congress. The Congress should seek forgiveness from the people of the Northeast,” he stated.
The minister attributed the region’s newfound stability to the Modi government’s peace initiatives, which brought insurgent groups to the negotiating table and led to the signing of peace accords. He also noted the record flow of investments, establishment of industries, and enhanced employment opportunities for local youth over the past decade.
Sonowal lauded the electrification and double-tracking of railway lines, describing it as a historic first for the region. He further credited the ‘Act East’ policy for strengthening the Northeast’s connectivity with Southeast Asia, creating new opportunities for trade and development.
He pointed out the Prime Minister’s consistent focus on the Northeast, mentioning Modi’s 60 visits to the region over the past decade and regular visits by central ministers to ensure governance reaches every corner.
On the inaugural Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024, Sonowal described it as a celebration of the Northeast’s cultural and economic richness. The three-day event, to be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from December 6 to 8, aims to showcase the diversity and potential of the eight northeastern states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim, collectively referred to as the “Ashtalakshmi.”
“The culture of Northeast India is a vibrant tapestry woven with centuries of traditions, diverse languages, rich folklore, and breathtaking landscapes,” Sonowal said. He highlighted the festival as a platform to celebrate the region’s unique identity and modern progress.
