SC extends Pawan Khera’s interim bail till March 3

Guwahati: The Supreme Court (SC) on February 27 granted Congress politician Pawan Khera temporary immunity from arrest after he made a statement on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Assam Police arrested the Congress politician last week in response to the uproar over a comment made about Prime Minister Modi at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI).

The Assam and Uttar Pradesh governments asked for more time to submit affidavits in response to Khera’s request that two FIRs be launched against him, one from Assam and one from Uttar Pradesh, over comments he made about Prime Minister Modi. The Supreme Court responded by extending the protection.

The highest court ruled that Khera would be safe until its subsequent hearing, which is probably scheduled on March 3.

On February 23, Khera was arrested after being made to disembark an IndiGo flight to Raipur, where Congress was having a plenary session.

After the arrest, the chief justice of the highest court was contacted within hours, and he granted Khera temporary release and protection from arrest until February 28.

On February 17, Khera referred to the Prime Minister as Narendra Gautamdas Modi while appearing at a press conference in Mumbai.

The purpose of the news conference was to announce the Congress’ demands for a legislative investigation into the claims made against the Adani Group by American short-seller Hindenburg Research.
