SC: Kamakhya Temple Not Being Properly Maintained
Guwahati: The Supreme Court declared on Wednesday that the Kamakhya Temple in Assam is not being adequately maintained, emphasising on sanitation.
There cannot be any compromise on hygiene, a court panel made up of Justices Ajay Rastogi and CT Ravikumar said in a case involving the upkeep of the temple.
Justice Rastogi who visited the place during vacation observed, “I was there during the vacations, and the temple is not being properly maintained. This is my personal opinion. There can’t be any compromise on hygiene.”
Senior attorney Rajeev Dhavan who stood on behalf of the temple claimed that in this particular case a small number of people have been submitting letters complaining that hygiene is not being maintained.
He explained to the supreme court that the temple is being looked after by enlisting the help of professional organisations like the Indian Institute of Technology.
Meanwhile, the court postponed the case’s hearing until January 2023 in order to encourage a mutually beneficial resolution between the parties.
The Supreme Court rejected a contempt petition filed by an elected priest on behalf of Bordeuri Samaj Kamakhya Devalaya members last year that claimed the Kamakhya Debutter Board had misappropriated funds.
