SC: Maha Political Crisis a Tough Constitutional Issue

Guwahati: The Supreme Court is currently hearing petitions concerning the Maharashtra Political Crisis, which was precipitated by disagreements within the Shiv Sena.

The Supreme Court stated that there were “difficult” constitutional issues to resolve because they had “extremely serious” political repercussions.

The matter will be heard once more by the highest court today. The two Sena groups have filed petitions on judicial review, speaker and governor powers, and disqualification.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is reported to have warned his Cabinet colleagues that this year’s potential El Nino event in the Pacific Ocean could lead to a drought-like condition in the state.

The Indian Express reported that Fadnavis made his comment in the context of preparing the state in terms of water supply as well as to lessen potential adverse effects on agriculture. While stating that it was too early to comment on monsoon rains, a representative from the state’s Relief and Rehabilitation department noted that El Nino years are typically associated with reduced rainfall.

The Maharashtra Governor made comments on the formation of the state’s government during his arguments before the Supreme Court on Wednesday in the dispute between the Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions of the Shiv Sena. The Supreme Court took exception to this.
