SC to Hear Pleas Challenging CAA on Sept 12

Guwahati: The Supreme Court will hear several petitions contesting the constitutionality of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 on September 12.

Over 200 petitions contesting the change will be reviewed by a panel consisting of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justice Ravindra Bhat.

A bench headed by the then-CJI SA Bobde issued a notice in the petitions in January 2020.

It should be mentioned that the central government asserted in their affidavit that the CAA does not violate any rights that may have existed before the amendment’s passage.

It was further asserted that the CAA does not aim to interfere with any Indian citizen’s constitutional, democratic, or secular rights.
