Guwahati: The journalists protested on Saturday in front of the Guwahati Press Club to demand justice for Asomiya Pratidin Banjit Thakuria, a prominent journalist who was attacked by criminals on September 7 at midnight outside of Gauhati Commerce College.
When journalist Banjit Thakuria went to gather information on the restaurant fire at Fat Belly, he was attacked by some masked miscreants in front of the police.
The Chandmari Police later took action against the journalist based on the accusation made by the miscreants although three people were detained by the police in connection with the incident after it occurred.
Based on a FIR filed by the miscreants, the Chandmari police who had earlier detained the miscreants at midnight also detained Banjit Thakuria the following morning. In addition, the Officer in Charge of Chandmari Police Station questioned the restaurant owner and the journalist about why the journalist had to rush to the fire location.
As a result, the media organised a protest to demand that the OC be dealt with harshly and justice be served for Banjit Thakuria. The protest has included participation from a number of journalists associations from across the state.
Among the journalists who have participated in the protest are senior journalists Haider Hussain, Dilip Chandan, Prakash Mahanta, Dharjya Hazarika, Pranoy Bordoloi and others.
