SDF Leader Girish Chandra Rai Resigns Ahead of Sikkim Elections

Northeast Desk, 12th March: Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) leader Girish Chandra Rai has tendered his resignation from his post in Sikkim, ahead of the upcoming elections. The reasons for his resignation remain undisclosed.

In his resignation letter, Rai expressed his gratitude for the responsibilities entrusted to him during his tenure with the party. He thanked the party for the opportunities and experience gained while serving in various capacities.

The SDF released its initial list of six candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections on Monday. Although not officially confirmed, SDF party chief Pawan Chamling declared them as the party’s candidates during a peace rally.

The list includes SDF President Pawan Chamling, a five-time former Chief Minister and eight-time MLA, who will contest for the eighth time from Namchi-Singhithang, his home constituency. Chamling has consistently won this seat since 1985 and has also emerged victorious from Poklok-Kamrang and Rangang-Yangang in past elections.

Other candidates in the list are Norzang Lepcha from Tunim Lingee, Hissey Lachungpa from Lachen Mangan, Gnawong Chopel Lepcha from Kabi Lungchok, Ashis Rai from Arithang, and Sonam Gyasto Lepcha from Dzongu.
