Section 144 imposed in Kaziranga to prevent fishing on ‘Uruka’

Guwahati: Section 144 CrPC has been imposed by Golaghat district administration Kaziranga National Park in order to prevent community fishing during Uruka.

Section 144 has been ordered with immediate effect in and around Kaziranga National Park.

The authorities invoked Section 144 because the locals had previously violated the Forest Act by engaging in community fishing during Magh Bihu.

The restriction includes Kaziranga National Park as well as Tiger Reserve and its peripheral areas especially in the beels and other wetlands of the park.

Moreover, the relevant authorities has placed tight limitations on bringing firearms, dangerous weapons, and other weapons inside the aforementioned places, as well as transporting fishing equipment including nets and other tools.

However, it is noted in the same letter that guards, police officers, security staff, and other government employees are free from the tight limits put in place by the relevant divisional authority.

It needs to be noted that during the Magh Bihu festival, particularly the days before it is celebrated, members of some communities allegedly violate the wildlife protection act of 1972 by going community fishing in the wetlands and other beels in Kaziranga National Park and its surrounding areas. This poses a threat to the park’s biodiversity.
