Security Forces Destroy Illegal Poppy Plantations in Manipur’s Anti-Drug Crackdown
Imphal: Security forces in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district have destroyed six acres of illegal poppy cultivation, intensifying the state’s ongoing war against drug production, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The operation, conducted between Khoripok and Sehjang villages in the New Keithelmanbi police station area, targeted illicit poppy farms used for producing opium and other highly addictive drugs. Authorities have been actively eradicating such plantations as part of a statewide crackdown on narcotics cultivation.
According to official reports, the Manipur government has destroyed approximately 20,000 acres of illegal poppy plantations across at least 12 districts since 2017, signaling a strong stance against drug trafficking and production in the region.
In a separate operation on February 8, security personnel in collaboration with the forest department destroyed another five acres of illicit poppy plantations at G. Monglian village hill range, Churachandpur district. Officials also seized 10 poppy pods as evidence, further strengthening the case against illegal cultivation.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, security forces launched the Churachandpur operation in the presence of the District Magistrate. The eradicated five-acre poppy farm had the potential to yield approximately 25 kg of illicit opium, underscoring the scale of the drug trade in the region.
The continued enforcement operations are part of Manipur’s War on Drugs initiative, aimed at curbing drug production, trafficking, and substance abuse. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to eliminating illegal poppy plantations and taking strict action against those involved in narcotics cultivation.
