Security Tightened at Tripura’s Akhaura ICP Amidst Planned Protest

Agartala: The Tripura Police has heightened security measures and erected barricades around the Agartala’s Akhaura Integrated Check Post (ICP) in anticipation of a planned protest, “Bangladesh Chalo Abhiyan,” scheduled for today.

The protest, organized to denounce alleged atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh and the arrest of ISKCON member Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu, was to commence in front of the Rabindra Shata Barshiki Bhawan in Agartala.

West District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar confirmed that a group had sought permission to hold the protest rally but was denied. To ensure the safety of the ICP and prevent any untoward incidents, additional security forces have been deployed.

“We have rejected permission for the ‘Bangladesh Chalo Abhiyan’ protest. To strengthen security at the Agartala-Akhaura ICP, we have deployed extra forces and set up barricades,” said SP Kumar.

He further assured that regular cross-border passenger movement between Bangladesh and Agartala via the ICP remains unaffected.

In a separate incident yesterday, seven individuals were arrested for burning the Bangladesh national flag. The accused are set to be produced in court for police remand. Authorities are also scrutinizing CCTV footage to identify other potential culprits.

Tripura shares an 856-kilometer-long international border with Bangladesh, with two operational Integrated Check Posts: Agartala-Akhaura and Srimantapur. These ICPs are crucial for facilitating cross-border trade and passenger movement.
