Senapati District Students’ Association Enforces NH-2 Economic Blockade Amidst Manipur Unrest
Northeast Desk, 6th October: One day after the conclusion of the Committee on Tribal Unity Sadar Hills’ more than a month-long Economic Blockade, the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) initiated another Economic Blockade due to the ongoing ban on internet access, commencing at 6:00 p.m. on October 5.
The internet ban, which had been in effect for nearly five months since May 3, 2023, was temporarily lifted on September 23 but was reinstated by the Government of Manipur on September 26. Initially, the shutdown was meant to last for five days, until October 1, following protests in Imphal over the tragic deaths of two Meitei teenagers.
On October 1, the government extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services within the state for an additional five days, until October 6, 2023. The SDSA expressed its disappointment and dismay at this extension and issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding the restoration of mobile internet services in Senapati District, which had remained peaceful.
The student body emphasized that access to the internet is not merely a privilege but a fundamental right, and the continuous statewide ban, even when issues are localized, violates citizens’ basic rights.
Despite receiving no response from the State Government before the ultimatum’s expiration, the SDSA, with no other democratic means of expression, proceeded with the proposed indefinite economic blockade starting at 6:00 p.m. on October 5 along National Highway-2.
The SDSA called upon the general public and all concerned individuals to support their cause for the welfare of the people while warning against any exploitation of the situation by individuals or groups in their name.
