Senior UDP Leader Calls for Peace Amid Meghalaya-Assam Border Dispute
Northeast Desk, 19th June: Mayralborn Syiem, a senior leader of Meghalaya’s United Democratic Party (UDP), has stressed the importance of peace amidst the ongoing border dispute with Assam. Highlighting reports of frequent conflicts in disputed areas, Syiem emphasized that it is the state government’s duty to uphold peace and stability.
According to media sources, Syiem asserted that Meghalaya stands firm on not conceding any land to Assam. He reiterated that the state’s priority is to safeguard the interests of its indigenous population, a stance upheld by the committee formed to address the border issue.
Syiem, who is also a member of the committee overseeing the dispute, expressed optimism about the upcoming talks between Meghalaya and Assam. He mentioned that both states are preparing to resume discussions, aiming to reach a mutually beneficial resolution.
The border disagreement between Meghalaya and Assam spans six contentious areas, highlighting the complexity and sensitivity of the issue. As tensions persist, Syiem’s call for peace underscores the need for diplomatic dialogue and collaborative efforts to resolve the dispute amicably.
