Severe Flooding in Assam as Brahmaputra and Tributaries Surge Past Danger Levels
Guwahati, 18th June: Continuous rainfall over the past few days has caused the Brahmaputra River and several of its tributaries to surge past danger levels, severely affecting multiple regions in Assam and neighboring states. The Kopili, Barak, Katakhal, and Kushiyara Rivers have all risen above their danger marks, exacerbating the flood situation.
The floods have impacted 309 villages across 21 revenue circles in 14 districts, including Tamulpur, Bongaigaon, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Nagaon, Hojai, Chirang, Barpeta, Baksa, Nalbari, and Goalpara. Karimganj remains the hardest hit, with 95,315 people affected by floodwaters. Nagaon, Dhemaji, and Barpeta are also severely affected, with thousands of residents suffering from the inundation.
In Kampur, the Kopili River is flowing dangerously high, submerging approximately 1,005.7 hectares of cropland. In total, 3,168 individuals have sought refuge in 14 relief camps and centers as floodwaters wreak havoc on both people and property. The disaster has also affected 62,173 animals, including livestock and poultry, with 21 large animals reportedly washed away in Dhemaji district.
Rescue operations are in full swing, led by local residents, civil defense personnel, trained volunteers, and local authorities. So far, 72 people and five animals have been evacuated by boats, primarily in Karimganj district. The government and relief agencies continue to monitor the situation, providing essential aid to those affected and working to mitigate the ongoing crisis.
