Severe Rainfall in Meghalaya Causes Road Washout and Landslides, Disrupts Connectivity
Northeast Desk, 18th June: Incessant rainfall in Meghalaya led to a critical section of road at Siju’s Darang Boldak village in South Garo Hills district being washed away on June 16. The Rongdik river also saw rising water levels, exacerbating the situation.
The road damage disrupted connectivity between Nangalbibra and Baghmara, affecting travel routes from Williamnagar to Baghmara via Nangalbibra, and from Baghmara to Nangalbibra via Siju. Authorities restricted access to only large vehicles on the damaged road, while another route suffered extensive damage, rendering it impassable for any vehicles.
The hilly areas experienced soil erosion and numerous landslides, impacting five houses severely, as reported by local media. The Superintendent of Police, South Garo Hills district, highlighted the swelling Simsang river, further complicating access to Darang Boldak village.
Earlier IMD warnings on June 17 indicated an expectation of extremely heavy rainfall in the Northeast region, particularly Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, over the next 3-5 days.
