Shahabuddin Chuppu Set to Become 22nd Bangladesh President

Guwahati: The leader of the Awami League Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu has been nominated by the majority-ruling party to be the next president of Bangladesh, reported Dhaka Tribune.

Chuppu was chosen as the next president because no one else had submitted a nomination for the post.

The presidential election’s nomination process came to a close on Sunday at 4 o’clock.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced to the media on Sunday that Shahabuddin Chuppu, a former commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, a retired district and sessions judge, and a freedom fighter, had been nominated by the Awami League Parliamentary Party to run for president.

Candidates must submit their nomination by Sunday in order for it to be reviewed on Monday, according to the Election Commission. Tuesday is the cutoff date for withdrawal of candidature.

The presidential election will be run by the chief election commissioner who is also the election’s electoral officer.

According to the rules, the presidential election must be held between January 24 and February 22 by the Election Commission.

The presidential election must take place 90 to 60 days before the incumbent’s five-year term expires, according to Article 123 of the constitution.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, Shahabuddin received a flower bouquet from Awami League leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following the submission of his nomination.

Later in the morning, Awami League leaders, including Obaidul Quader, presidium members Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, and Chief Whip of Parliament Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, along with Shahabuddin — a lawyer by profession and a member of the party’s advisory council — visited the Election Commission to submit his nomination.

Shahabuddin was born in 1949 and began his illustrious political career while he was still a student.

Shahabuddin Chuppu, a native of Pabna a district in northern Bangladesh has held a number of political and governmental positions.

Shahabuddin was a significant figure in the northern region during the Liberation war, a conflict between Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) and Pakistan, which took place in 1971, according to the Dhaka Tribune.

He was the Swadhin Bangla Chattra Sangram Parishad’s convener and student leader.

During the war, he and former Awami League praesidium member Mohammad Nasim were instrumental in the Pabna district.

During his tenure, he completed a number of significant tasks with success including serving as the chairman of the Judicial Inquiry Commission and a member of a judicial inquiry committee.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, he was appointed to the Awami League Advisory Council in January 2020.
