Shehbaz Sharif elected as 23rd PM of Pakistan

Guwahati: Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was elected as Pakistan’s 23rd Prime Minister by the national legislature on Monday.

“Mian Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif has got 174 votes,” said PML-N leader Ayaz Sadiq, who led the session following the departure of Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri.

Following a speech by former foreign minister and PTI candidate for prime minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members resigned in droves from the national legislature and walked out, according to ANI.

After former PM Imran Khan was deposed following a no-confidence motion against his government, Shehbaz Sharif, the younger brother of former PM Nawaz Sharif and a former opposition leader, was anticipated to take over.

The proposal was defeated by 174 votes in favour of the no-confidence motion, and the Imran Khan-led government was forced to resign.

During a joint news conference of the opposition parties on March 30, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), announced Sharif’s candidacy for the office.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan, in a landmark decision, ordered the parliament to reconvene on Thursday after overturning Deputy Speaker Suri’s April 3 verdict that the no-confidence motion was unconstitutional.
