Sheikh Hasina Requests India’s Assistance in Importing Electricity from Bhutan

International Desk, 23rd March: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reached out to India for support in importing electricity from Bhutan, with the proposed transmission route passing through Indian territory. This appeal was made during a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence with Pranay Verma, the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

The discussions indicated that an agreement to facilitate electricity import is on the verge of finalization, with anticipation building around the upcoming visit of Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyal to Dhaka on March 25. Alongside this, Sheikh Hasina emphasized the importance of addressing India’s anti-dumping measures concerning the import of jute and jute goods from Bangladesh. She further suggested the possibility of modernizing the Syedpur Railway Workshop under Indian assistance.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister underscored Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment to upholding democratic values, emphasizing their pivotal role in the nation’s progress and development trajectory. Pranay Verma shed light on various collaborative projects in Bangladesh funded by the Indian Line of Credit, underscoring initiatives like the Rupee-Taka bilateral trade transaction and the production of the Bangabandhu Biopic.

Moreover, discussions revolved around ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership between the two countries. There was also mention of the potential establishment of a defence factory in Bangladesh through a joint venture with India.

In a cordial gesture, the Indian High Commissioner extended an invitation from the Indian Prime Minister for Sheikh Hasina to visit India, post the conclusion of the Indian National Election, signifying the robust diplomatic ties between the two nations.
