Shillong central jail likely to come up in next 3-4 years

Guwahati: The central jail in Shillong of Meghalaya is expected to open in the next three to four years.

The jail which will be built in the new Shillong municipality, will be built on approximately 25 acres of land.

This was informed by Meghalaya Inspector General of Police (IGP) for prisons – M Kharkrang.

“It’s a massive undertaking.” “It’ll take roughly 3-4 years,” Kharkrang said.

This will be Meghalaya’s first central jail.

Convicts will be separated from under-trial prisoners in the new central jail, which will help to decongest the Shillong district jail.

It needs to be noted that the British-era Shillong district jail was built in 1897.

The Shillong District Jail has a capacity of 175 convicts, but there are now 464 inmates imprisoned at the facility.

Meanwhile, the Nongstoin district jail is being built and is nearing completion.

It may be mentioned that around 40% of the Nongstoin jail’s building work has yet to be completed.
