Sikkim Appoints 12 SHG Women Leaders to Top Government Roles
Gangtok: In a groundbreaking move set to redefine women’s participation in governance, the Sikkim government has elevated 12 accomplished women leaders from Self Help Groups (SHGs) to the prestigious positions of Chairpersons and Officers on Special Duty (OSDs) across a range of state departments. This landmark decision underscores Sikkim’s unwavering dedication to fostering inclusive development and empowering women in decision-making capacities.
The newly appointed women leaders, brimming with gratitude, extended their heartfelt thanks to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. They lauded his foresight in recognising their inherent leadership capabilities and providing them with an unparalleled platform to champion the cause of women’s upliftment throughout Sikkim. This initiative, they believe, marks a new chapter in the state’s social and political landscape.
Chumila Bhutia, now at the helm of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) as its Chairperson, voiced the collective sentiment, stating, “We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Sikkim Government and our most respected, honourable Chief Minister. With his visionary leadership, we are committed to building a golden, prosperous, and empowered Sikkim — in line with the vision of a developed India by 2047.” Ms. Bhutia further emphasised the formidable strength of the SHG movement within the state, proudly noting its expansion to over 55,000 members. This robust and unified network of women, she highlighted, transcends geographical boundaries, extending its influence far beyond Sikkim. “This is not just a local initiative — it’s a national force of empowered women,” she passionately asserted.
This transformative step by the Sikkim government is being hailed as a pivotal moment in the state’s ongoing pursuit of gender equity and the strengthening of grassroots leadership. It is poised to inspire countless more women to step forward and embrace roles of significant influence and responsibility within the public sphere, ushering in an era of enhanced female representation and leadership.
