Sikkim BJP Condemns Violent Attack on Government Critic, Demands Justice

Gangtok: The Sikkim Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a strong condemnation following a physical assault on Noel Sharma, a citizen known for his vocal criticism of the state government.

In a press release dated April 6, the party articulated its profound concern regarding the escalating incidents of violence aimed at silencing dissenting voices within Sikkim.

The BJP characterized these attacks as a grave menace to democratic principles and the fundamental right to free speech. “A disturbing pattern is emerging where individuals expressing opposition to the government are being subjected to intimidation and violence,” the statement emphasized, underscoring the incompatibility of such actions with a democratic society.

Reports indicate that Noel Sharma, who has consistently voiced his disapproval of the current administration, was recently attacked by unidentified assailants. While the precise circumstances surrounding the assault remain under investigation, the BJP asserted that this act of violence reflects a perilous trend. The press release also noted that numerous police complaints have been lodged against Sharma across various police stations in Sikkim, and that he has made serious allegations against numerous individuals.

The BJP clarified that if Sharma has violated any laws, the matter should be addressed through due legal process by the police and the judiciary. “We uphold the rule of law. If he has committed any wrongdoing, the legal system should take its course. However, resorting to physical assault is a cowardly act, and violence has no place in a democratic framework,” the party stated.

The BJP called upon all Sikkimese citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations, to unite in opposition to such violent acts. They urged the public to safeguard the right to free expression and peaceful dissent, emphasizing that in a democracy, every individual is entitled to articulate their views, even those critical of the government.

“We implore the police to treat this matter with utmost seriousness and apprehend those responsible for the attack without delay. Swift justice is imperative to convey a clear message that violence will not be tolerated,” the BJP declared.

As of now, Noel Sharma has not issued an official statement. However, sources close to him indicate that he is recuperating and is expected to address the matter publicly in the near future. Social media platforms have been inundated with messages from Sharma’s supporters and concerned citizens, all condemning the attack and demanding justice.
