Sikkim: BJP State Chief Raises Alarm Over Rising Unemployment Linked to Substandard Universities
Northeast Desk, 1st March: DR Thapa, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) state chief, has voiced deep concerns regarding the escalating unemployment crisis, attributing it to the proliferation of substandard universities in the region. Thapa emphasized the urgent necessity for high-quality educational institutions to tackle the pressing issue of unemployment in the state.
Highlighting the adverse effects of inadequate universities on Sikkim’s workforce, Thapa underscored the absence of University Grants Commission (UGC) affiliated institutions in the state. He expressed dismay over the prevalence of universities that merely confer degrees without imparting substantial knowledge or education, urging the government to prioritize the establishment of reputable, UGC-accredited universities.
Thapa asserted, “The current state of unemployment in Sikkim can largely be attributed to the influx of subpar universities,” emphasizing the crucial role of education in shaping the future of Sikkim’s youth.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of stringent standards in university accreditation, Thapa called for a comprehensive vetting process to ensure that educational institutions uphold quality standards and provide holistic learning experiences.
Thapa’s concerns were reiterated in his discussions with the government, where he advocated for the establishment of well-recognized universities across Sikkim’s constituencies. Despite the government’s initiative to introduce nine private universities, Thapa cautioned against compromising educational standards for quantity, stressing the paramount importance of universities in nurturing competent professionals.
