Sikkim Celebrates 10 Years of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ Initiative at MG Marg
Gangtok: The Women and Child Development Department of Sikkim celebrated the tenth anniversary of the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) initiative with a vibrant event at MG Marg on January 23.
The occasion marked a decade of efforts dedicated to empowering girls and promoting their education under the nationwide scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.
The event was graced by Minister and Area MLA of 31-Lachen Mangan Constituency, Samdup Lepcha, along with Gangtok Mayor Nil Bhadur Chettri, CLC President Pawluse Tamang, and other prominent dignitaries. Their presence underscored the significance of the milestone and reinforced the commitment to the program’s objectives.
Launched on January 22, 2015, the BBBP initiative aims to combat the declining child sex ratio and emphasize the critical role of education for girls in achieving gender equality.
Over the past decade, the initiative has witnessed notable progress, raising awareness, improving child sex ratios, and empowering women through various interventions.
Sikkim, in particular, has emerged as a model for success under the program, with the collaborative efforts of the government, civil society, and individuals creating a more inclusive and equitable environment for girls.
The state’s achievements highlight the impact of targeted initiatives in fostering gender parity and promoting education as a tool for empowerment.
The anniversary celebration served as a reminder of the progress made and the continued need for collective action to ensure that the vision of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ is fully realized, both in Sikkim and across the nation.
