Sikkim Celebrates Golden Jubilee with Landmark Snow Leopard Count
Gangtok: Amidst the joyous celebrations marking its 50th Statehood Day, Sikkim has received a significant ecological boost with the first-ever official documentation of 21 endangered snow leopards inhabiting its remote northern and western highlands. This groundbreaking revelation underscores the state’s pivotal role in preserving the delicate biodiversity of the eastern Himalayas.
The comprehensive report, a collaborative effort by Sikkim’s Forest and Environment Department and WWF-India, culminates two years of meticulous research. Scientists deployed strategically placed camera traps across the challenging high-altitude terrains, patiently monitoring and identifying these elusive predators without disrupting their natural habitat.
Adding a touch of local charm to this conservation milestone, the state government unveiled “Kuzu,” a snow leopard, as its official wildlife mascot. Kuzu symbolizes Sikkim’s unwavering commitment to wildlife preservation and environmental stewardship.
“This discovery transcends mere scientific achievement,” affirmed Pradeep Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Forest and Environment Department. “It stands as a testament to the efficacy of Sikkim’s conservation policies and the dedication of local communities in nurturing our forests and their precious inhabitants.” In a remarkable anecdote highlighting Sikkim’s rich biodiversity, Kumar recounted an instance where a single camera trap captured both a Royal Bengal tiger and a snow leopard, a rare co-existence indicative of the region’s ecological significance.
The auspicious announcement coincided with Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee, commemorating five decades since its formal integration into the Indian Union in 1975. Prior to this, Sikkim held the status of a protectorate following India’s independence, eventually embracing full statehood through a democratic referendum.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt greetings to the people of Sikkim on this momentous occasion. In a social media message, he conveyed, “Warm greetings to the people of Sikkim on their Statehood Day! This year, the occasion is even more special as we mark the 50th anniversary of Sikkim’s statehood! Sikkim is associated with serene beauty, rich cultural traditions and industrious people. It has made strides in diverse sectors. May the people of this beautiful state continue to prosper.”
