Sikkim Celebrates Republic Day, Marks 50 Years of Statehood with Visionary Goals
Gangtok: On the occasion of Republic Day, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang extended warm greetings, honoring the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the guiding principles enshrined in the Constitution.
This year’s celebrations carry special significance as Sikkim gears up to commemorate its 50th statehood anniversary on May 16, 2025, marking its journey since becoming the 22nd state of India in 1975.
Reflecting on this milestone, CM Tamang emphasized the state’s collective progress, resilience, and aspirations. “This milestone reflects our collective progress, resilience, and aspiration,” he remarked, crediting visionary leadership and the determination of the Sikkimese people for transforming the state into a model of sustainable development, environmental conservation, and inclusive growth.
Sikkim has gained national and international acclaim for its achievements in organic farming, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable tourism.
The Chief Minister highlighted key initiatives like “Mero Rukh Mero Santati,” aimed at afforestation, and the “Sikkim Shishu Samriddhi Yojana,” which provides financial support for newborns, underscoring the state’s commitment to blending social welfare with environmental stewardship.
Advancements in healthcare and education also took center stage, with CM Tamang outlining super-specialty treatments now available at the New STNM Hospital and initiatives like the Bahini Yojana, which promotes menstrual hygiene.
Reaffirming the government’s focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), he emphasized inclusive progress for all citizens while envisioning “Sunaulo Sikkim, Samridha Sikkim, Samarth Sikkim” (Golden, Prosperous, and Empowered Sikkim).
Sustainable tourism was highlighted as a critical pillar for economic growth, with the Chief Minister stating, “By integrating sustainability with world-class infrastructure, we are opening new opportunities for our people, creating employment, and strengthening our economy.” He invited stakeholders to promote the best of Sikkim to the world.
Women’s empowerment remains a priority for the state, with transformative programs like the Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana, which provides ₹40,000 annually to single mothers, and 50% reservation for women in Panchayat seats.
Another initiative, the Sikkim Aama Sahayog Yojana, offers four free LPG refills annually to mothers aged 18-59, improving health and reducing indoor pollution. These efforts align with the broader goals of promoting gender equality and sustainable living.
Addressing demographic concerns, the Chief Minister expressed worry over the declining Total Fertility Rate (TFR), which has dropped to 1.1 in Sikkim.
He announced the Vatsalya Scheme, which provides financial support for IVF treatments, and the establishment of a Reproductive Medicine Unit at STNM Hospital to address these challenges.
Looking ahead, CM Tamang reaffirmed the government’s focus on foundational infrastructure, termed “Bi-Pa-Sa”—electricity, water, and roads—as the key to economic growth. He also acknowledged the Central Government’s support in advancing Sikkim’s development goals.
As Sikkim approaches its 50th statehood anniversary, the Chief Minister called upon citizens to actively participate in the celebrations, marking five decades of progress and resilience. “Let us progress together, embracing innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability for a brighter future,” he concluded, urging unity and collective effort for the state’s continued development.
