Sikkim Celebrates Women’s Day, Governor Hails Pivotal Role in Nation-Building
Gangtok: Sikkim’s state-level celebration of International Women’s Day witnessed Governor Om Prakash Mathur passionately acknowledging the indispensable role of women in shaping society, highlighting their significant contributions spanning education, politics, sports, and business.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, along with other esteemed dignitaries, joined the celebration, underscoring the state’s commitment to gender equality.
Governor Mathur paid homage to historical icons and contemporary women leaders from diverse regions, recognizing their unwavering dedication in the pursuit of education, independence, and gender equality. He elaborated on the historical challenges women faced in their quest for empowerment and education, recalling the valiant efforts of figures like Helen Lepcha, Kanaklata Barua, Rani Gaidinliu, and Bhogeswari Phukanani, whose courage significantly contributed to India’s freedom movement.
He also shared a compelling anecdote from Rajasthan, recounting the story of Hari Rani, a woman whose extraordinary dedication and sacrifice during wartime exemplified the indomitable spirit of Indian women and their crucial role in shaping the nation’s destiny. Governor Mathur emphasized the remarkable transformation of women’s roles over the past decade, noting their excellence in fields such as defense, aviation, business, technology, and sports. He highlighted that women today are not only homemakers but also leaders, entrepreneurs, and pivotal decision-makers.
“In the present day, women are piloting fighter jets, leading businesses, excelling in sports, and making a mark in international forums. Women have also proven their capabilities in agriculture, technology, and governance,” Governor Mathur stated. He acknowledged the achievements of notable women from Sikkim, including Manita Pradhan, India’s first female national football referee, and Rashmi Chhetri, who have brought pride to the state. He also recognized the significant impact of women in music, education, and entrepreneurship on Sikkim’s progress.
During his address, Governor Mathur lauded the central and state governments for implementing various initiatives aimed at women’s empowerment. He highlighted key schemes such as Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Mahila Shakti Kendra, Ujjwala Yojana, and PM Dhan Jan Yojana, which have significantly improved the lives of women nationwide. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for driving transformative changes in women’s empowerment, citing landmark legislative decisions like the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Triple Talaq Bill as crucial reforms ensuring equal rights and opportunities.
Governor Mathur affirmed Sikkim’s leading role in gender equality and women’s empowerment, noting the state’s remarkable progress in ensuring women’s participation in governance, with 50% of seats in Panchayat elections reserved for women. He also highlighted the significantly low crime rate against women in Sikkim, reflecting the state’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment.
He underscored the importance of financial independence for women, stressing that self-reliance is the cornerstone of true empowerment. He acknowledged the contributions of women entrepreneurs in Sikkim, such as Rinzing Choden Bhutia and Meena Rai, who have excelled in the beauty and business industries, creating employment opportunities and achieving national and international recognition. He encouraged young women to draw inspiration from these role models and pursue their ambitions with confidence.
Governor Mathur asserted that societal progress is inextricably linked to the advancement of women, urging citizens to champion gender equality by ensuring women receive the respect, opportunities, and resources they deserve. “Women are the foundation of society. Only when women are empowered can society truly progress. Let us all pledge to support and uplift the women around us, ensuring a future where they can thrive in every sphere of life,” he concluded.
The event was graced by the presence of prominent figures, including the Chairperson of the Bidhan Sabha, Rajkumari Thapa, and other key officials, who collectively honored the achievements and struggles of women throughout history.
