Sikkim Chief Engineer Adopts Endangered Blue Sheep

Gangtok: Sonam Phintso Sangdarpa, Chief Engineer of the Sikkim Nationalised Transport Department, has made a significant contribution to wildlife conservation by adopting a Blue Sheep under the Himalayan Zoological Park’s animal adoption programme in Gangtok. This gesture showcases his profound appreciation for wildlife and understanding of the importance of conservation.

Sangdarpa is a multifaceted individual known for his calm and thoughtful demeanor. A devout follower of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he is well-versed in Buddhist philosophy and regularly attends Vipassana meditation retreats. This ancient practice has helped him develop a deeper understanding of the human mind and remain composed under pressure. Apart from meditation, Sangdarpa enjoys playing chess, studying chess masters’ strategies to improve his own thinking process. He is also a former striker for the Tenacian Veterans football team and continues to support the sport passionately.

Sangdarpa’s decision to adopt a Blue Sheep, locally known as “Bharal,” was inspired by the species’ gentle nature and peaceful behavior. By donating ₹10,000 to the Himalayan Zoological Park, he is contributing to the conservation of this globally endangered species. The Blue Sheep is native to the Himalayan region and can be found in Sikkim’s Yongzokdrak Blue Sheep Conservation Zone within the Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Blue Sheep is listed as globally endangered due to habitat loss and climate change. Sangdarpa’s adoption highlights the importance of conservation efforts and the impact individual actions can have on protecting vulnerable species. His contribution will aid in preserving the Blue Sheep’s habitat and promoting its conservation.
