Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Celebrates World Fisheries Day
Sikkim: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang marked World Fisheries Day on November 21 by emphasizing the vital role fisheries play in driving sustainable development.
Addressing fish farmers, researchers, and stakeholders, Tamang underscored the significance of fish farming beyond its economic benefits.
“Fish farming is more than an economic activity; it is a vital pillar of sustainable development,” Tamang said. “It supports families, strengthens communities, conserves aquatic ecosystems, and provides essential nutrition.”
Tamang highlighted the state’s commitment to uplifting fish farmers through government initiatives such as:
- Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY): Provides financial and technical support to modernize practices and increase productivity.
- Mukhya Mantri Matsya Utpadan Yojana (MMMUY): Offers additional support to fish farmers.
The event recognized 10 outstanding fish farmers and fishermen from each district for their innovative contributions to the sector. A Buyers and Sellers Meet was also organized to facilitate collaboration and address challenges within the fisheries industry.
Tamang urged the fisheries community to adopt sustainable practices and leverage available support programs. “Together, let’s strive for a brighter, greener, and more sustainable future for aquaculture in Sikkim and beyond.”
As the 6th Chief Minister of Sikkim since 2019, Prem Singh Tamang has been leading the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha party. Under his leadership, the party won 31 out of 32 seats in the 2024 Sikkim Legislative Assembly election.
