Sikkim: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Flags Off ‘HILL WALKATHON’ on International Everest Day
Northeast Desk, 29th May: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on the morning of May 29 flagged off the ‘HILL WALKATHON,’ a significant event organized by the Denzong Sherpa Association in collaboration with the state Tourism Department. This walkathon is a part of the celebrations marking the 17th International Everest Day 2024.
International Everest Day commemorates the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on May 29, 1953. Declared globally in 2008 following the passing of Sir Edmund Hillary, this day celebrates mountaineering achievements and the spirit of adventure.
The day’s celebrations will continue with a theme-based program at Chintan Bhawan, where awards and certificates will be presented to mountaineers. The event aims to recognize and honor the contributions and achievements of those in the mountaineering community.
The celebrations will culminate in cultural performances at MG Marg, fostering a sense of camaraderie among the local community and visitors. The event highlights the rich cultural heritage of the region and brings together people in a spirit of unity and celebration.
