Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Resigns as MLA from Soreng-Chakung, Citing Election Rules
Northeast Desk, 14th June: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has made a surprising decision to step down as the MLA from the Soreng-Chakung constituency, following his wife’s resignation from the 11-Namchi-Singithang Constituency just a day earlier.
In a heartfelt social media post, Chief Minister Tamang expressed immense gratitude to the people of Sikkim, particularly those from the 07-Soreng-Chakung and 19-Rhenock constituencies, for their steadfast support, which he credited as instrumental to their electoral success.
According to the Conduct of Election Rules 1961, under Section 67/A, Chief Minister Tamang acknowledged the requirement to relinquish one of the two constituencies within 14 days of the election results declaration. With tomorrow, June 15, being the final day for this decision, he announced his resignation from the 07-Soreng-Chakung constituency with a heavy heart. This move allows for an honest and loyal party member to assume the role of legislator.
Despite stepping aside, Chief Minister Tamang pledged to continue serving the people of Sikkim diligently as their MLA. Born and raised in Soreng-Chakung, with his mother still residing there, he assured constituents of his unwavering support and assistance.
Chief Minister Tamang concluded his message by thanking the people of the 07-Soreng-Chakung constituency for their unity, dedication, and sacrifices. He expressed ongoing gratitude for the opportunity to have served as their MLA and urged everyone to continue working together towards a prosperous future for Sikkim.
