Sikkim CM Advocates State Issues in Pre-Budget Meeting with Finance Minister
Northeast Desk, 22nd June: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang recently participated in a crucial pre-budget meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other state representatives at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. During the meeting, CM Tamang underscored the importance of cooperative federalism and highlighted Sikkim’s pressing concerns for inclusion in the Union Budget 2024-25.
In his address, CM Tamang congratulated the Finance Minister and stressed the pivotal role of cooperative federalism in fostering equitable development across states. He specifically raised Sikkim’s urgent needs, notably the aftermath of the South Lhonak Lake outburst, which caused severe flooding and extensive damage. Tamang urged the Centre to allocate an additional special grant to facilitate long-term recovery efforts and emphasized the critical need to restore NH10, the state’s primary arterial road.
“The recent flooding due to the South Lhonak Lake outburst has necessitated substantial support for our recovery efforts,” CM Tamang stated. “Restoring NH10 is crucial for reconnecting our communities and facilitating essential services.”
Addressing environmental concerns, CM Tamang highlighted the risks associated with heavy rainfall and advocated for sustainable solutions to mitigate these challenges effectively. He also expressed concerns about the significant cost disparities in construction and maintenance specific to Sikkim, urging that these factors be taken into account during rehabilitation planning.
Furthermore, CM Tamang raised financial grievances, including the annual revenue loss from the Teesta III project and the shortfall in IGST settlements for the fiscal year 2023-24. He called for fair compensation and a review of these settlements to ensure equitable fiscal support for the state.
“In addition to financial assistance, I proposed enhancing allocations for Sikkim and retaining borrowing limits for states,” CM Tamang added. “Increased support under the National Social Assistance Programme will further aid in our developmental efforts.”
Concluding his remarks, CM Tamang expressed confidence that the upcoming budget would address these critical issues and contribute to the growth and welfare of Sikkim. His proactive stance and advocacy for state-specific concerns underscored his commitment to advancing Sikkim’s interests at the national level.
