Sikkim CM Champions Youth-Driven Tourism at International Conclave

Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has positioned young people as the architects of tourism’s future, not only within Sikkim but on a global scale.

Speaking at the International Youth Conclave for tourism development in Yangang, South Sikkim, he lauded the state’s achievements, designating Sikkim as India’s “green and organic jewel” and a national exemplar.

“Though we are a small state on the border, we have become a model for the whole country,” Tamang stated during the three-day event. “We have worked hard in many areas like saving the environment, reducing poverty, giving more power to women, and making sure development is good for everyone.” He emphasized the conclave’s role as a nexus for collaboration, innovation, and inspiration.

Tamang clarified his presence was not merely as the state’s chief minister, but as a fervent believer in the youth’s capacity to redefine tourism into a more meaningful and impactful experience. He revealed that Sikkim boasts a literacy rate exceeding 90 percent, and the state’s GDP has surged by 85 percent in the past five years. He further highlighted that tourism now contributes nearly 10 percent to Sikkim’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), underscoring the sector’s economic significance.

He detailed Sikkim’s focused initiatives in eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and community-led tourism, noting the establishment of over 1,000 homestays across the state. These homestays, he explained, not only generate income for local residents but also offer tourists an authentic glimpse into Sikkimese life.

Outlining the state’s progressive policies, Tamang referenced programs such as “Mero Rukh Mero Santati” (My Tree, My Child) and the “Shishu Samriddhi Yojana,” designed to nurture children and safeguard the environment. These initiatives, he asserted, exemplify Sikkim’s commitment to future generations.

Directing his remarks to the assembled youth, he stressed the pivotal role of their ideas, narratives, and endeavors. “Whether it is through digital storytelling, new businesses, or green projects, it is your creativity that will shape the future of tourism,” he encouraged.

Tamang expressed gratitude to the international participants from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Iran, and Bangladesh, as well as to the event organizers, volunteers, government departments, and partners who contributed to the conclave’s success.

“This is our chance to connect cultures, support local jobs, and make Sikkim a global tourism leader,” he concluded. “Let us shape a tourism industry that celebrates nature, uplifts communities, and inspires generations.”
