Sikkim CM Lauds Press Club on 23rd Foundation Day, Reaffirms Govt Support
Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday extended his warmest felicitations to the Press Club of Sikkim (PCS) on its 23rd Foundation Day, terming it a significant milestone for professional journalism in the state. The Chief Minister underscored the pivotal role of the press in nurturing informed public discourse and strengthening democratic values.
In his official communication, CM Tamang acknowledged the PCS’s commendable efforts in serving as a unifying force for media professionals across the region. He highlighted the Club’s consistent dedication to bringing together journalists who work tirelessly to inform, educate, and inspire the people of Sikkim.
“This Foundation Day is not merely a celebration but also a moment for deep reflection,” CM Tamang observed. “It’s an opportune time for the media fraternity to assess its journey, exchange insights, and chart a progressive path forward.”
Emphasising the indispensable role of a free press in a robust democracy, the Chief Minister reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to media freedom, welfare, and overall growth. He stressed that the government has maintained close coordination with the PCS to foster a thriving ecosystem for journalism in Sikkim.
Among the notable initiatives, CM Tamang pointed to the long-awaited establishment of the Press Club of Sikkim Bhawan, a key demand of the journalist community that has now been fulfilled. “I am confident that our media professionals are now greatly benefiting from the enhanced facilities at the new Bhawan,” he stated.
The Chief Minister also detailed several government measures aimed at bolstering the media sector. These include the institution of journalism awards to recognise excellence in reporting on critical themes such as climate change, human rights, and women’s issues. Furthermore, the government has provided a 17-seater vehicle to the Press Club to facilitate its logistical requirements.
In a significant move to honour journalistic excellence, the government has instituted the Teesta Rangeet Aviral Kalam Puraskar, an annual award presented on Independence Day to recognise the lifetime contributions of seasoned journalists. Additionally, the prize money for two other prominent awards—Kanchendzonga Kalam Puraskar and Lagansheel Yuwa Patrakar Puraskar—has been enhanced to ₹1,01,000 and ₹51,000 respectively.
Addressing the financial stability of media houses, CM Tamang mentioned the revision of advertisement rates in 2024, a step taken to bolster economic resilience within the media industry.
On the welfare front, the state government has extended health insurance coverage to 90 accredited journalists. The Patrakar Samman Yojana has also been launched to provide pension support to retired journalists, with a grant-in-aid of ₹20 lakhs already distributed to senior members of the profession through the PCS.
In his concluding remarks, CM Tamang reminded journalists of their crucial responsibility to society. “With immense respect comes significant responsibility,” he stated, urging the media to remain steadfast in their commitment to truthful reporting and public enlightenment.
He also encouraged the press to leverage its platform to highlight the peace, development, and progress achieved in the state. “May our media space be increasingly utilised to showcase Sikkim’s peace, prosperity, and the collective accomplishments of its people,” he added.
