Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang Contests from Two Assembly Seats, Relies on Welfare Measures for Electoral Success
Northeast Desk, 9th April: Sikkim Chief Minister and SKM leader, Prem Singh Tamang, opts to contest from two assembly constituencies – Soreng-Chakung and Rhenock – diverging from his previous victory in the Poklok-Kamrang constituency in 2019.
Tamang’s electoral strategy hinges on showcasing the welfare measures implemented by his administration, including provisions such as free LPG cylinders distributed quarterly to all households, a yearly cash transfer of Rs 40,000 to women heads of families under the ‘Aamaa Yojana’, additional increments for indigenous people in state government service for each additional child, provision of an assistant to care for infants for one year, and the regularization of services for 27,000 temporary government employees, among other initiatives.
The 56-year-old Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) leader faces a competitive electoral landscape, particularly in the Rhenock assembly seat, where he contends against five rivals, including his former ministerial colleague Som Nath Poudyal.
Tamang’s contenders in the Rhenock constituency comprise Kapil Prasad Sapkota (Congress), Prem Chhetri (BJP), Laxmi Sharma (SRP), and Tika Ram Sharma (CAP-S), reflecting a multi-cornered electoral contest.
