Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang Launches National Programme for Elderly Health Care

Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) on December 14 at Mintokgang, marking a significant step towards improving the health and well-being of the state’s elderly population.

The initiative seeks to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare services tailored to the needs of senior citizens, promoting active and healthy ageing.

The launch event, attended by Health and Family Welfare Minister GT Dhungel and other dignitaries, highlighted the programme’s alignment with the objectives of the National Rural Health Mission (NHM), AYUSH, and Social Welfare departments, fostering a holistic approach to elderly care.

Dedicated geriatric wards have been established, with 20 beds at STNM Hospital and 10 beds in all district hospitals. Specialised outpatient departments (OPDs) will offer comprehensive medical services, including screening, diagnostics, rehabilitation, and regular consultations for elderly and retired patients.

To enhance mobility and independence, the programme will provide essential medical devices such as spectacles, hearing aids, and wheelchairs in collaboration with NHM and Social Welfare programs. Capacity building for healthcare professionals will also be prioritised, with training in geriatric assessment and treatment to ensure specialized care.

Community engagement is a key focus, with initiatives such as multispecialty health camps held during the annual International Day of the Elderly in October, where free medicines and services are provided. Home-based care and tele-consultation services will further improve accessibility, with support available through Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and Sub-Health Centers (Sub-HCs). Wellness activities and awareness campaigns will encourage healthy lifestyles among senior citizens while equipping family caregivers with essential skills.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Tamang emphasized the importance of supporting the elderly population. “Together, let us work towards ensuring that our elderly and retired population live healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives,” he said.

The NPHCE reflects Sikkim’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its elderly citizens through comprehensive healthcare and community-driven support.
