Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang Pays Tribute to Former CM Nar Bahadur Bhandari on Birth Anniversary
Northeast Desk, 5th October: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang led the state in paying tribute to former Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari on his birth anniversary. A commemorative event was held at *Samman Bhawan, where several dignitaries, including Madame **Krishna Rai, Deputy Speaker, Mayor, Councillors, Additional Chief Secretary, and various *MLAs and Ministers, gathered to honour the legacy of one of Sikkim’s most influential leaders.
Bhandari, who served as Sikkim’s Chief Minister from *1979 to 1994, is widely remembered for his crucial role in the inclusion of the *Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, a milestone that safeguarded the linguistic rights of the Nepali-speaking community and strengthened their cultural identity on a national level.
During the event, floral tributes were laid to commemorate Bhandari’s contributions, and Chief Minister Tamang lauded his efforts in shaping modern Sikkim. “His vision not only propelled Sikkim’s progress but also solidified the state’s cultural fabric,” Tamang remarked, acknowledging Bhandari’s role in uniting the Gorkha community and promoting the use of the *Nepali language, for which he was awarded the *Jagadamba Shree Purasakar.
Bhandari’s legacy, as the founding leader of the Sikkim Sangram Parishad and an architect of the state’s development, continues to inspire the people of Sikkim, as evidenced by the homage paid by the leaders and citizens during the ceremony.
