Sikkim CM Takes Helm as Badminton Patron, Unveils National Tournaments

Gangtok: Sikkim’s sporting landscape is set for a dramatic transformation as Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has officially accepted the role of Chief Patron of the Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS).

This landmark decision, revealed following a productive meeting between the Chief Minister and BAS President Jacob Khaling, signals a significant commitment to elevating the sport within the Himalayan state.

“We are honoured and humbled by the Chief Minister’s decision,” expressed Khaling, highlighting the profound impact of Tamang’s support. “His encouragement inspires us to dream bigger and work harder for the future of badminton in Sikkim.”

This endorsement has ignited a renewed sense of purpose within the association, propelling them towards ambitious goals.

In a direct response to the Chief Minister’s patronage, the BAS has announced a series of high-profile badminton events, poised to place Sikkim firmly on the national sporting map.

The inaugural All India Chief Minister Badminton Open Championship, a prestigious tournament, is slated to debut this year, promising to draw top-tier players from across the nation.

Further solidifying Sikkim’s growing prominence in the badminton circuit, the state will also host the highly anticipated 2nd Sikkim Badminton Premier League and the National Open Championship.

These events not only promise to showcase exceptional talent but also aim to cultivate a vibrant sporting culture among the state’s youth.

Recognizing the importance of grassroots development, the BAS has outlined plans for comprehensive inter-school badminton championships, encompassing both individual and team competitions.

These statewide tournaments will provide young students with invaluable opportunities to hone their skills and pursue professional sports careers.

In a substantial financial boost to the sport, Chief Minister Tamang has secured an annual sponsorship of Rs 1 crore from industrial and corporate sectors, alongside a direct government grant of Rs 10 lakh.

This significant funding will be instrumental in upgrading infrastructure, organizing tournaments, and delivering specialized technical training for aspiring athletes.
