Sikkim CM Unveils Phased Welfare Rollout, Prioritising Vulnerable

Gangtok – Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has outlined a meticulous and staggered strategy for dispensing housing aid and crucial welfare provisions, including blankets and roofing sheets, across the state. The primary focus, he underscored, remains firmly on assisting the economically weaker sections first.

In a recent public address, the Chief Minister reiterated his administration’s resolute promise to construct homes for all token holders by 2027. Emphasising a methodical implementation, he stated, “We are prioritising the genuinely needy. Rushing the distribution to all at once only creates confusion and mismanagement.” The ambitious housing project is slated to encompass 27 distinct zones statewide. Beneficiaries who have already commenced building their homes will be grouped separately and receive government assistance in the form of construction materials and labour support. CM Tamang clarified that the monumental task of constructing 11,000 houses will be executed in phases, aligning with Panchayat, district Panchayat, and MLA constituency boundaries, marking a departure from the erstwhile 100-houses-per-ward model.

Addressing public queries concerning allotment orders and perceived delays, CM Tamang firmly remarked, “Even judicial officials have received allotment letters. Let them wait. We are proceeding step by step, as planned.” He reassured the populace that no rightful beneficiary would be overlooked but stressed the imperative of adhering strictly to verified lists.

As part of the broader welfare initiative, the distribution of blankets and roofing sheets is set to commence from July 19. Supplies have already been dispatched from Gangtok to district stores, with several regions, including West Sikkim, having received their allocations at their respective Block Administrative Centres (BACs). Residents can collect their designated items from their local BAC or Block Development Officer (BDO) offices.

However, CM Tamang issued a stringent warning against any instance of black marketing or resale of government-distributed items. “These blankets are meant for your comfort, not for sale. We are monitoring from the BAC level, and strict action will be taken against violators,” he asserted. Citizens found to be selling or purchasing these welfare materials illegally will face penalties, and no refunds will be entertained. The blanket distribution programme, which had been temporarily deferred following the funeral of Padmashree Jiyas, will now resume statewide as per the revised schedule. CM Tamang appealed to all beneficiaries to utilise the items responsibly and refrain from any misuse. “Take it home and use it. If you’ve bought it illegally, return it. There will be no second chances,” he cautioned.
