Sikkim CM Welcomes North East Region Vision 2047 Team
Gangtok: The Chief Minister of Sikkim recently welcomed the North East Region Vision 2047 team in Gangtok, marking a significant step towards long-term development strategies for the North East. This vision aims to enhance connectivity, address infrastructure gaps, and foster regional trade under India’s Act East Policy.
Vision 2047 identifies key priorities, including:
- Enhancing Connectivity: Developing transportation networks to improve accessibility and facilitate trade.
- Addressing Infrastructure Gaps: Upgrading infrastructure to support economic growth and improve quality of life.
- Fostering Regional Trade: Promoting trade and commerce within the region and with neighboring countries.
However, the North East Region faces unique challenges, such as its landlocked position and reliance on the narrow “chicken-neck corridor.” To counter these, plans are underway to open new waterway routes through Bangladesh, with additional future corridors under consideration.
Vision 2047 also tackles recurring issues, including Assam’s flood and erosion problems, exacerbated by sediment from the Brahmaputra River. Effective management will require coordinated support from all NER states and the Central government.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia is steering this initiative, working closely with state governments to ensure a comprehensive and timely framework. The North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi) has been tasked with drafting Vision 2047.
The state honored prominent figures, including Dr. Mahendra P. Lama, appointed as Emeritus, Chief Economic Advisor to the Chief Minister, for his contributions to the region’s development.
