Sikkim: Darjeeling Celebrates Valor of Indian Soldiers with Inauguration of 72-Foot Flag Mast at Batasia War Memorial

Gangtok: A grand flag hoisting ceremony was held today at the Batasia War Memorial in Darjeeling, marking the inauguration of a 72-foot flag mast in honor of the valor and sacrifices of Indian soldiers, with a special tribute to the revered Gorkha soldiers.

The event, organized by the Zila Sainik Board, Darjeeling, and supported by the Indian Army, symbolized the nation’s deep gratitude toward its defenders.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, who attended as the Chief Guest, along with Lieutenant General Zubin A. Minwalla, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Trishakti Corps, military officials, veterans, Veer Naris (war widows), and dignitaries from the state government.

The event began with a solemn wreath-laying at the memorial, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag and the playing of the National Anthem, invoking strong patriotic sentiments. The inauguration of the flag mast, along with the unveiling of the inaugural stone, was a significant moment in honoring the bravery and sacrifices of India’s soldiers.

Built in 1995, the Batasia War Memorial honors the Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army who gave their lives in service to the nation. Set against the backdrop of the Darjeeling hills and the Kanchenjunga range, the memorial features a landscaped circular garden and a bronze statue of a soldier, embodying the spirit of valor.

The ceremony also included a felicitation of Veer Naris and other awardees, acknowledging the sacrifices made by military families in service to the country.
