Sikkim Democratic Front Addresses Supreme Court Petition Withdrawals
Sikkim: The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Party has issued a formal response to the withdrawal of two significant Writ Petitions filed in the Supreme Court of India concerning the appointment of Shri Prem Singh Tamang as Chief Minister of Sikkim.
The petitions, filed in 2019 by Shri Bimal Dawari Sharma and in 2023 by Shri J. B. Darnal, had challenged the Election Commission’s decision to reduce Tamang’s disqualification period from six years to just over one year, allowing him to assume the Chief Ministerial role.
According to the SDF, it recently came to their notice, via social media platforms, that the Supreme Court dismissed both petitions on November 26, 2024, following applications for withdrawal by the petitioners. The party clarified that these withdrawals were undertaken independently by the petitioners without consulting or seeking authorization from the SDF.
In the case of Shri Bimal Dawari Sharma, the SDF stated that he had already resigned from the party and is no longer affiliated with it. Regarding Shri J. B. Darnal, who serves as the Vice President of the SDF, the party emphasized that his decision to withdraw the petition was made unilaterally and without the party’s approval or a formal resolution.
The SDF expressed grave concerns over what it termed “anti-party activity” by both individuals. The party has assured its members and supporters that appropriate measures will be taken to address these actions and uphold the party’s principles.
The withdrawals and the SDF’s subsequent response have added a new layer of complexity to the political dynamics in Sikkim, as the party distances itself from these developments and underscores its commitment to internal discipline.
