Sikkim Disaster Management Authority Issues Advisory for Teesta River Flood Risk
Northeast Desk, 30th May: The Sikkim Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) has issued an advisory, alerting residents along the Teesta River embankment to prepare for a potential surge in water levels in the coming days. The alert follows advisories from the Central Water Commission (CWC) regarding the ongoing rainfall pattern, which indicates the likelihood of rising river levels.
The SSDMA has stressed the need for vigilance due to the unpredictable weather patterns. “The Central Water Commission has issued continuous advisories regarding the present rainfall pattern, indicating a potential escalation in the river’s water level,” the SSDMA stated.
Residents along the Teesta River basin are urged to stay informed through local news channels, radio broadcasts, or official government websites. The advisory recommends preparing an emergency kit with essential items, including non-perishable food, water, medicine, clothing, important documents, a flashlight, and batteries. Additionally, valuables and important belongings should be stored in waterproof containers or elevated to a higher level within homes.
In response to the rising water levels, District Collector Pakyong directed an inspection led by Thendup Lepcha, SDM Rangpo. Accompanied by officials from the Rangpo Nagar Panchayat, Fisheries Department, Forest Department, and Police Personnel, the team assessed the Teesta river belt in Rangpo Subdivision and the River Rangpo belt to ensure public safety.
The CWC issued an alert at 1 am today, urging people along the Teesta River basin to remain vigilant. The alert serves as a crucial reminder for residents to take necessary precautions and avoid walking or driving through flooded areas.
The advisory emphasizes the importance of community support, particularly for vulnerable individuals, and encourages residents to maintain communication with neighbors and emergency services. Any emergencies or concerns should be promptly reported to the relevant authorities.
