Sikkim Extends Ban on Excavation Activities Amid Unpredictable Weather
Northeast Desk, 29th August: In response to ongoing climatic challenges and fluctuating rainfall patterns, the Sikkim government has extended the ban on excavation activities for construction purposes. Originally scheduled from May 1, 2024, to August 31, 2024, the restriction is now in effect until September 15, 2024.
The extension was announced through a public notice, following Notice No. 737/UDD/Secy dated March 26, 2024. The ban, enforced under the Sikkim Allotment of House Sites and Construction of Building (Regulation and Control) Act, 1985, requires all excavation activities in the notified areas to halt during this period. This measure aims to protect the environment and public safety amid the state’s volatile weather conditions.
The notice confirmed that all terms and conditions from the previous notification remain applicable until the new deadline. Authorities have urged residents and construction entities to adhere to these regulations to mitigate risks associated with the extended monsoon season.
