Sikkim Flags Off Inaugural Mountain Rush Car Rally
Gangtok: Gangtok witnessed a historic moment today as the first-ever Mountain Rush – Sikkim Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Car Rally commenced from the iconic Ridge Park.
The event marks a new chapter in the state’s engagement with motorsport and adds to the ongoing festivities celebrating Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Anniversary.
Organized through a collaborative effort between Summit Times, Service to Mankind, and the Information & Public Relations Department (IPRD) of the Government of Sikkim, the rally has also received the crucial backing of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI). This partnership underscores the significance of the event in promoting both adventure and the spirit of Sikkim’s golden jubilee.
The starting line at Ridge Park’s 0 KM mark buzzed with anticipation as 32 vehicles and their crews prepared for the challenging journey ahead. The first leg of the rally will see participants navigate their way to Lachung, a stunning village nestled in North Sikkim, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and tranquil atmosphere. The rally is also envisioned to boost rural tourism and highlight the hospitality of local homestays along the route.
Adding a unique element to the competition, each participating team was provided with a “Tulip,” a specially designed rallying document. This pictorial guide is fundamental to TSD rallies globally, offering precise route instructions that enable drivers and navigators to adhere to the strict time and speed regulations that define this format of motorsport. The “Tulip” signifies the commencement of a test of precision and driving skill.
The flag-off ceremony was graced by the presence of key dignitaries, including Anapurna Alley, Secretary of IPRD, and Umesh Sunam, Director of IPRD, alongside other senior government officials, seasoned motorsport professionals, and dedicated members of the organizing committee, all of whom shared in the excitement of this landmark event for Sikkim.
