Sikkim Flood Relief: First Batch Airlifted, NDRF Deployed

Pakyong, Sikkim: In a significant breakthrough for flood-hit Sikkim, the first batch of individuals stranded in Chaten was successfully airlifted today, June 3rd. Two MI-17 V5 helicopters, part of the ongoing massive rescue operation, safely touched down at Pakyong Greenfield Airport carrying 34 evacuees.

Among those rescued were several injured army personnel, who are now receiving urgent medical attention, along with their family members and numerous tourists. These individuals had been cut off due to extensive landslides and the relentless severe weather that has battered the region. Authorities have confirmed that these crucial evacuation efforts will press on, weather permitting, with the injured, elderly, and families with young children being accorded top priority.

Adding crucial muscle to the relief mission in North Sikkim, two V-5 helicopters also landed at Pakyong Greenfield Airport earlier today, deploying National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. These specialized units are set to significantly bolster the ongoing relief and rescue efforts across the affected areas. The first sortie of the day saw 23 NDRF personnel, along with vital supplies, airlifted from Pakyong to Chaten, one of the most severely impacted regions. The NDRF teams are equipped with satellite phones and other critical emergency gear, ready to commence immediate on-ground operations.
