Sikkim: Follow-up Visit Conducted to Address Water Scarcity Issue in Pakyong
Northeast Desk, 30th May: In response to directives from DC Pakyong regarding water source disruption and ensuing water scarcity issues in Pakyong, a supplementary visit was undertaken to the Dhungelkharka area. The objective was to evaluate NHIDCL’s mitigation efforts and identify further actions needed to resolve the water scarcity problem.
The visit was attended by key personnel, including the Assistant Engineer from PHED Pakyong, BO Barapathing, Project Engineer from NHIDCL, and Project Manager (Contractors NHIDCL). Each member contributed expertise and insights to assess the situation comprehensively.
Upon inspection, it was found that measures to redirect rain surface runoff water to the Richu source of the Pakyong Water Supply were inadequate. More proactive steps are required to ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply.
Recommendations were provided on effectively utilizing surface drainage and implementing slope protection measures, including the use of geotextiles on the valley side to prevent erosion and stabilize water supply infrastructure.
NHIDCL is mandated to submit an action report to the District Administration by May 31st, detailing proposed steps to address the issues identified. This report will guide future interventions and monitor mitigation progress.
Meanwhile, the PHED Pakyong field team took immediate action to temporarily fix damage using HDPE pipes at the under-construction DAC slide caused by a recent landslide. This temporary measure ensures continuous water supply to affected areas while permanent repairs are planned.
