Sikkim: Gangtok Himalayan Football Club Shines Bright as the Emerging Stars of the region
Northeast Desk, 7th December: Gangtok Himalayan Football Club’s remarkable journey from grassroots dreams to regional dominance has solidified its status as a powerhouse in northeastern football. Established in October 2012 by coach Pranay Subba and visionary Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, the club has become a nurturing ground for emerging football stars, overcoming challenges along the way.
Despite their success, the perennial challenge of securing sponsorship looms over the club. Coach Pranay Subba emphasizes the need for additional support from stakeholders to elevate football in Sikkim. Reflecting on their journey, Subba recalls milestones such as reaching the finale of the All India Governor’s Gold Cup in 2019 and participating in the I-League, and Durant Club, placing the Gangtok Himalayan Football Club in the spotlight and winning hearts of football enthusiasts.
The current President, Tshering Tashi Bhutia, attributes the club’s success to the dedication and financial backing of Tenzing Norbu Lamtha. With plans to establish an under-15 team, the club aspires to compete in the I-League and the Indian Super League (ISL). Bhutia expresses joy at the growing interest from football enthusiasts in joining the club, acknowledging the fierce competition and believing that this is just the beginning.
Founder and owner Tenzing Norbu Lamtha’s infectious passion for the sport plays a pivotal role in the club’s operations, fostering strong personal bonds with its members. In October 2014, the club made waves by reaching the semifinals of the Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup, setting the stage for a series of remarkable seasons.
The year 2016 marked a turning point for the club, achieving unprecedented success across prestigious competitions like the I-League 2nd Division, Durand Cup, Sikkim Gold Cup, and Sikkim Premier Division League. Despite narrowly missing I-League qualification, the club showcased their mettle in the fiercely competitive 2015–16 season.
In 2019, Gangtok Himalayan’s journey to the final of the 39th edition of the Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup showcased their indomitable spirit. While securing victory in the Independence Day Football Tournament that same year, they narrowly missed clinching the Governor’s Gold Cup championship in a closely contested match against Mohammedan Sporting.
The club’s ambition to join the prestigious I-League garnered recognition, but unforeseen circumstances prevented them from seizing the opportunity. Undeterred, their pursuit of excellence continued in 2020 when they ventured beyond borders to participate in the 18th Aaha! Rara Gold Cup in Nepal, facing challenges but maintaining their commitment to excellence.
